1931 Ford Model A
Deluxe Roadster - Scale 1-32

Ford Model A Diecast

Gamble On Replacement For Model T Pays Off

By 1927 it was clear to everyone at Ford's that the nineteen-year-old Model T was long overdue for replacement. Not everyone was convinced of the wisdom of replacing the T - producing a new model was far from easy. A whole generation of Americans had grown up with the Model T and rolling out a replacement proved to be a traumatic experience for all involved.

Work on the new model was kept top secret - the Ford factories closed down for nearly five months. In the meantime, the public remained loyal to Ford - 375,000 orders were placed at Ford dealerships for the new car, whose specifications were as yet completely unknown!

When the new car finally left the factory, the trepidation turned out to be completely unfounded - over 25 million people flocked to Ford showrooms in the first week, just to get a glimpse of the new Model A.

The new model was well received - it was a little short and high by 1927 standards, but its light weight combined with the 20 cubic inch (3.3 litre) 40-bhp engine ensured a very satisfactory performance.

The transverse spring front and rear suspension were retained from the Model T, but the T's two-speed epicyclic transmission was replaced with a more conventional three-speed system with central change.

Ford Model A prices ranged from $460 for a modest two-seater roadster up to $1,200 for a town car - though not many of the top models were sold.

In 1929 the range was extended to include the world's first production station wagon. There were also pickup, van and taxi Model As, as well as the longer wheelbase AA Truck.

In 1932 the Model A even found a new home in the Soviet Union, where it became the first mass-produced car in Russia, the GAZ-A. Production continued up to 1936.

At home in America, the A was succeeded in 1932 by the V-8, based on the same chassis, after around 4.5 million Model As had been produced.

This Ford Model A diecast features dozens of hand-assembled parts. Other details, such as opening doors, rumble seats and tailgates; dual-opening hood with intricately detailed engine, you would normally expect in replicas that sell at much higher prices.
