Philadelphia - Scale 1-50
1954 Greyhound Scenicruiser - Philadelphia
Americas First Bi-Level Coach
200 of these Greyhound bi-level Scenicruisers still survive today - out of
1001 produced from 1954 onwards!
After WWII, on completion of the national highway
system, Americans were ready to travel. The aging railway network, perceived
as old and dirty, did not meet the challenge.
More and more people were buying
cars, but there were still millions of Americans without their own automobile.
Greyhound stepped up to the plate with the development of the bi-level Scenicruiser.
43 passengers were accommodated in thermostatically air-conditioned luxury,
with skylights and glare-resistant glass to increase their comfort and enjoyment.
The heyday was not to last long - by 1956, automobile ownership and travel became the preferred mode of travel in the United States. Along with a similar downward trend in public transportation in general, ridership on Greyhound and its major rival Trailways bus routes went into a long decline.
Now, anyone with memories of journeys on these luxury coaches, which left an indelible print on so many people's lives, can recapture the excitement and spirit of the age with this precision diecast replica model:
