Ed Cole not only developed a V-8 for the Chevy,
but also one that was so fast it easily broke
the Pikes Peak record for a standard American
car. Our 1:18 scale precision Diecast replica
has all the features that helped Chevrolet sell
over 40,000 convertibles in 1956. With its optional
V-8 engine thats what the front and rear vees
signify, two tone Matador Red/India Ivory factory-baked
enamel finish, it looks just as good as the originals
did cruising the streets of America almost 50
years ago.
Chevy Becomes the Young Man's Car
Beating Ford in sales was still something to brag
about, but Chevrolet had been doing that, on and
off, for years. Getting rid of its image as a
staid family car and attracting teen age boys
was another matter entirely. Chevrolet started
attracting that customer in 1955 with the introduction
of its V-8 engine. For 1956, the Bel Air was given
a new full-width grille no one liked 55s egg-crate,
sweeping side trim and new fender lines. This
sleeker look made chevy the affordable young mans
car. Even now, car shows are dominated by those
great Chevrolets from the mid-1950s.
