Chevrolet had a treat for the more than 2 million
Americans who attended General Motors "Motorama"
in 1954. This treat was a "dream" concept
car, the Corvette Nomad, the first 2-door stylish
station wagon ever shown to the public. Harley
Earl, Chevrolet's Head of Styling, was so overwhelmed
by the positive reaction to this vehicle that
he immediately had his designers convert the design
to a Chevrolet for 1955. Designed by Carl Renner,
the 1955 Chevrolet Nomad was America's first Sports
Utility Vehicle.
Like today's SUVs, it combined youthful pizzazz
and upscale appearance with utility both for passengers
and cargo. With design features like the front
end "eyebrow" headlights and chrome
fender and door spears, it is no surprise that
Motor Trend picked it as one of the year's most
beautiful cars and the Milestone Car Society has
selected it as one of the Certified Milestone
Cars of the post-war era.
