59 Cadillac Eldorado
A Finned Monster So Big It Could Swallow Jaws
Whole!
Monument to America's Glory Years.
Its most remarkable feature was its foot high
rear fins. Even today, more then 40 years later,
these fins are still featured in ads and movie
posters. They are so famous the US Postal Service
put them on a stamp.
The 1950s still remain America's favorite decade
for cars. With a growing middle class, exodus
to the suburbs, and a population weary of the
sacrifices of WWII and the Depression, US auto
manufacturers out-performed themselves with flashy
new styling and colors.
And the most flamboyant of them all is the 59
Cadillac Eldorado.
Bigger than a 2000 Suburban and costing as much
as a house ($7401), this Biarritz model came to
exemplify all that was good and bad from that
era.
Standard equipment included power brakes, windows,
and steering, 2-speed windshield wipers, and a
massive gas-guzzling 390 cubic inch V-8 engine.
Although only 1320 Biarritzs were produced, they
sparked Cadillac to #10 in total sales, beating
Lincoln and Imperial combined.
