Harley Earl's Masterpiece - Emperor P'u Yi's
1932 Cadillac Limousine
One look at this 1:18 scale masterpiece and
you'll have no doubt why it has been given Classic
Car status. This replica is guaranteed to be a
highlight of any die cast collection.
Even A Pretender Wanted the Best
Anxinjueluo Pu Yi - "The Last Emperor"
- was Japan's puppet. His own reign lasted just
3 years before being overthrown (Pu Yi was 6 at
the time). After over a decade in exile, Pu Yi
gladly accepted Japan's offer to ascend back to
the throne during the Japanese occupation of China.
In 1932, to celebrate this ascension, the Emperor
ordered the only car that was felt appropriate
for his position - a Cadillac. Until the end of
the occupation in 1945, this gleaming burgundy
and gold limousine was a common sight in the Manchurian
provinces, transporting the Emperor and his court.
The Goal Was Longer and Lower
In a mid-1950s interview, Harley Earl named the
1932 Cadillac as the favorite of all the cars
he designed. Always looking to lengthen and lower
cars, the 32 Caddys had their wheels reduced in
size by 2” and their roofs lowered by 3”,
plus sweeping clamshell fenders that flowed smoothly
into the running boards.
The powerful V-8 engine now provided 115 horsepower
and featured Triple-Silent Synchro-Mesh transmission.
