Wilhelm Maybach was one of the originators of the auto industry, designing the first cars for Daimler-Benz in the late 1880s. In 1907 he left to form his own company, collaborating with Graf Zeppelin on engines for the early airbuses. When the Treaty of Versailles banned Germany from producing airships, Wilhelm and his son Karl started producing automobiles. The 1932 DS8 Zeppelin was the crowning achievement of the Maybach company, which lasted until Karl’s death in 1960. Often called the 'German Rolls Royce', the Zeppelin featured a huge 8-liter 12-cylinder engine, 7-speed gearbox, body built by the renowned coach maker Spohn, and was so heavy (6600 lbs) that German authorities required a truck driver's license to operate it. This 1:18 scale precision die-cast replica has all the details of the original: double side spare tires, running boards, detailed engine, opening hood, front doors, and luggage trunk, all topped by a factory baked-enamel finish. It is easy to see why the 1932 Zeppelin has been designated a Classic Car by the Classic Car Club of America...
